• Select Amazon Review: This was a great book that told of how America was established, even pre-European contact. It is important that people do not forget about the history of the First Nations peoples who had come to America before any Europeans had. This book does well to shatter the stereotype of the First Nations people. They were a diverse people who had a rich culture and history. Contact with the Europeans changed everything. We can see in this book how Indians, Europeans, and Africans were shaping early America.
This book goes in-depth on the 13 colonies and their impact on America. It pulls together a history of the continent when events were often happening simultaneously in different geographic regions. I would definitely recommend this book as it provides a rich and concise history of colonial America. The last of the "Settling" is covered in the last chapter on "The Pacific" from 1760 - 1820 and includes 30 pages on the California Mission Era.This is a good way to compare and contrast the treatments of indigenous peoples of north American vs. the European Invasion. Whatever the Franciscans did in California, it paled in comparison to how the native people were treated in much of the rest of North America. The book also covers Spanish Intrusion into North America between 1500 - 1600.
