It is important that people do not forget about the history of the First Nations peoples who had come to America before any Europeans had. This book does well to shatter the stereotype of the First Nations people. They were a diverse people who had a rich culture and history. Contact with the Europeans changed everything. We can see in this book how Indians, Europeans, and Africans were shaping early America.

This book goes in-depth on the 13 colonies and their impact on America. It pulls together a history of the continent when events were often happening simultaneously in different geographic regions. I would definitely recommend this book as it provides a rich and concise history of colonial America. The last of the "Settling" is covered in the last chapter on "The Pacific" from 1760 - 1820 and includes 30 pages on the California Mission Era.This is a good way to compare and contrast the treatments of indigenous peoples of north American vs. the European Invasion. Whatever the Franciscans did in California, it paled in comparison to how the native people were treated in much of the rest of North America. The book also covers Spanish Intrusion into North America between 1500 - 1600.

• Select Amazon Review: This biography was very helpful to me because, before reading it, I knew very little about Saint Junipero; just what we were taught in public schools in San Diego while I was growing up. The author tries to present a balanced account of his subject's life and policies both in Mexico and in California. Because there is some controversy about Saint Junipero's missionary activities and the building and administration of the missions, I am eager to learn more. This book is well written, and it is a good start for me.

Book004: The Mission Walker

• Book004: The Mission Walker - By Edie Littlefield Sundby - 2017 - 311 pages - $3.68  Checked out by KF 11/16/2019.

• Size: 6.5" wide x 9" tall
•Best Amazon review available: I loved this book, it's so interesting and so inspiring. I felt as if I were on the journey myself, though I know I could never have done this as she did! The first phase was the story of having and battling cancer and Ms. Littlefield-Sundby has shown what that is like, physically and emotionally; she shares what it's like and how it interrupts daily life that we mainly take for granted. She writes with candor and wit and so many bits of wisdom that I plan to read again with a marker to highlight the insights I wish to remember and incorporate in my life. The middle was great fun - her walks and experiences on the Trail in California, her strength and strong will to live and experience all of life - even the very unpleasant - amazed me. The third part took me into another world, like a fly on the wall, walking this trail in Mexico with history of the missions and a view of other life styles and other culture woven in, plus her incredible spirit and kindness in the face of adversities and human frailties were impressive, to say the least. I would turn to the pix to see what each guide looked like, google the mission names. And then, when I least expected it, it all went crazy bad, difficult and dangerous for that last leg of the trip. So much suffering poured on by Mother Nature (and human nature!) and yet her gratefulness to be alive is expressed so succinctly and wryly at times you'll laugh out loud. Highly recommend!
